Day 5: My childhood meets college

Significant moment of the Day: Saved by the Bell Drinking Game

Don't judge me, I'm on vacation. For the record, Saved by the bell, the first four seasons are fantastic. Highly recommended. If you are a Saved by the Bell enthusiast, such as myself, you may try your hand at this drinking game on a saturday night (or a wednesday...if its winter break). Here are the rules:

1. Whenever Zack breaks the fourth wall (starts talking to the audience)
2. Topical Reference- 80's or 90's shout out
3. Whenever one of the main six characters insults another member of the group
4. When you spot the twins (season 1)
5. When Max from Max's diner does a magic trick or tries to be part of the gang

Have fun! I know I will.

For the record, I wrote this section prior to Saved by the Drink.

Okay first of all…let me just say I still love Pixar. They have proven, with their 100 or so awards, that they have an amazing talent of telling heartwarming stories enjoyed by children, adults, and college students alike. That is quite impressive. But know what else is impressive? The fact that in the 16 years Pixar has been making movies, they have never had a movie with a female lead role. Think about it. Here is the list of all the full-length Pixar animated movies and their lead roles that have been broadcast throughout the world, bringing joy to millions. Check to make sure:

Toy Story (1995)-Woody, Buzz
Bug’s Life (1998)- Flik
Toy Story 2 (1999)- Woody, Buzz
Monster’s Inc. (2001)- Mike, Sully
Finding Nemo (2003)-Nemo/Marlin
The Incredible’s (2004)- Mr. Incredible
Cars (2006)- Lightning McQueen
Ratatouille (2007)- Remy
Wall-E (2008)- Wall- E
Up (2009)- Mr. Fredrickson/Russell
Toy Story 3 (2010)- Woody, Buzz

Sure Dory, Boo, Eve, and Atta have strong supporting roles…but are they really the stars of the films? In 2011, Cars 2 will be played in theaters every once again depicting its male lead, Lightning McQueen. It isn’t until 2012, Pixar’s 13th full length animated picture that there will be a female lead role. But don’t get too excited. Why?

She’s a princess.

According to IMDB, Brave is about a Scottish princess, Merida, who defies her parents by perusing an interest in archery, but inadvertently jeopardizes her father's kingdom in the process.”

Uh….does anyone else see the irony in the fact that Disney just issued a statement saying they aren’t going to produce anymore “Disney Princess” films for a very long time and yet their partner company is going to release a princess film…in 2 years? Forget the fact that Disney claims that the princess movies aren’t what the modern child wants anymore. In case you didn’t know, this is why Disney changed Rapunzel to Tangled, and added fight scenes which therefore cut the musical numbers within the film drastically. To reflect today’s society, kids want action, adventure and fight scenes. But let’s leave Disney out of this for now.

The part that just really irks me is that it has taken 17 years for Pixar to develop a female lead… and she’s a princess. Really? Sure, in THIS film she likes archery.  Wow, look at that progress, we’ve got a full-fledged sister suffragette on our hands. I mean, don’t get me wrong I love Disney Princesses, and I’m sure Pixar’s Brave will be a great film. But there are other roles a female can play, yes? Wasn’t there a whole Women’s Movement about how women can do/ and should be allowed to do everything men can?

Or maybe I got that last part wrong.  I was probably in the kitchen. You know, with the other Disney/Pixar female lead roles.

  1. in the kitchen, making a sandwich. I'm kidding! Absolutely Kidding! Just being typical Silly McJokesterpants.:) I think you're absolutely right on all accounts. It really is a shame that it's taken 17 years for Pixar to make a female roll, and lo', it's a princess.
